ECOTEC selected to deliver Q-REN desulphurization technology for two Vireo biogas plants in Norway

ECOTEC is pleased to announce that Vireo AS has selected ECOTEC’s Q-REN regenerative chemical desulphurization technology for the new biogas plants at Hardanger and Lista in Norway.

Both facilities are currently under development and are expected to be commissioned during 2026 and 2027, contributing to the expansion of Norway’s biogas infrastructure and the conversion of organic residues into renewable gas for industry and transport.

For both plants, ECOTEC will deliver its Q-REN regenerative chemical H₂S removal system, a technology selected for its highly efficient hydrogen sulphide removal combined with low CAPEX and low operating costs. The system ensures stable gas quality and reliable operation for downstream upgrading and utilisation of the produced biomethane.

“Vireo conducted a thorough tender process involving several suppliers of scrubber technology. Following a comprehensive evaluation, Ecotec achieved the highest overall score. We placed particular emphasis on quality, operational reliability, and low operating costs—areas in which Ecotec came out as the winner. We now look forward to mobilization and the commissioning of the scrubber technology in our two upcoming projects,” says Richard Kringlebotten, CPO at Vireo AS.

For ECOTEC, the projects represent an important step in supporting the continued development of renewable gas infrastructure in Norway.

"We are proud to have been selected by Vireo for both Hardanger and Lista," says Oscar Carretero, CEO of ECOTEC. "These projects highlight the growing importance of robust gas treatment technologies in modern biogas plants. Our Q-REN regenerative desulphurization technology combines high removal efficiency with low capital and operating costs, while ensuring reliable gas quality for downstream upgrading and utilisation."

Both projects further strengthen ECOTEC’s growing presence in the Nordic biogas market.

Green Gas Solutions, ECOTEC’s representative in the Nordic region, supports the projects commercially and technically throughout development and implementation.

ECOTEC and BIMEO Solutions – Win Tender for Biogas Upgrade at Wastewater Treatment Plant in Copenhagen - Denmark.

The Spanish technology company and Green Gas Solution partner ECOTEC has secured a significant contract from the Greater Copenhagen Utility, HOFOR, for upgrading biogas at the Damhusåen Wastewater Treatment Plant. This project marks an important milestone in HOFOR's goal to deliver CO2-neutral gas to their customers.

The project involves the purification and upgrading of biogas supplied to HOFOR from BIOFOS' wastewater treatment plant. Using advanced membrane technology from ECOTEC's sister company, BIMEO Solutions, the biogas will be upgraded to a quality suitable for further processing. This will ensure a stable and sustainable energy source, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Òscar Carretero, CEO of ECOTEC, commented on the project: "We are excited to collaborate with HOFOR on this groundbreaking biogas upgrading project. BIMEO's advanced membrane technology will play a crucial role in delivering clean, sustainable town gas to Copenhagen, in line with our commitment to innovation and environmental sustainability."

By utilizing locally produced biogas, HOFOR can offer a renewable energy source that contributes to the green transition, enhances energy security, and reduces CO2 emissions. The project supports HOFOR's goal of delivering CO2-neutral energy solutions.

"This project is an important milestone. We have agreements to receive biogas from all three wastewater treatment plants in the city. Thus, Copenhageners' own wastewater is converted into biogas, which is mixed into the town gas. Our plan is to become self-sufficient and deliver 100% CO2-neutral town gas by 2025, and with the establishment of this membrane upgrading plant, we will achieve that goal,” says Morten Stanley, Head of Gas at HOFOR.

The project is managed by the Danish firm Nordic Green Engineering with ECOTEC as the main contractor. ECOTEC has extensive experience in building and maintaining desulfurization and other gas treatment plants in Denmark, while the Damhusåen project will be the first biogas upgrading plant that BIMEO installs in Northern Europe. Since its founding in 1991, ECOTEC has specialized in environmental technology with a focus on innovation and sustainability. BIMEO Solutions, a sister company to ECOTEC, specializes in advanced membrane solutions for biogas upgrading.

BIMEO's technical solution uses Sepuran® membranes from EVONIK, known for their high efficiency and reliability in separating CO2 from methane. This technology ensures optimal upgrading of biogas to natural gas standards, making it suitable for both the town gas network and the natural gas grid.

The project is facilitated by Green Gas Solutions, the leading supplier of hardware to the renewable energy sector in Denmark, representing ECOTEC and BIMEO commercially in the Nordic region.
