HOFOR inaugurates BIMEO’s first Nordic biogas upgrading installation

On 30 September, Green Gas Solutions joined HOFOR, BIOFOS and project partners in Valby to mark the inauguration of HOFOR’s new biogas upgrading facility.

The facility features BIMEO’s valorGas® membrane upgrading technology – BIMEO’s first installation in the Nordic market. ECOTEC acted as main contractor for the gas-treatment and upgrading solution, while Nordic Green Engineering managed the EPC project delivery.

Green Gas Solutions has supported ECOTEC and BIMEO throughout the project as their Nordic commercial and technical interface, connecting specialist technology with the local project, stakeholders and delivery process.

A key step in Copenhagen’s renewable-gas ambition

The new facility is an important part of HOFOR’s integrated energy system, which turns biogas from Copenhagen’s wastewater and sorted food waste into city gas.

With the Valby facility now in operation, Copenhagen’s city-gas supply is fully based on locally produced biogas. More than 200,000 customers – including homes, restaurants and businesses – are supplied through HOFOR’s city-gas network.

It is the result of more than 15 years of development by HOFOR and BIOFOS, connecting wastewater treatment plants, gasworks and distribution infrastructure in one circular energy system.

Proven upgrading technology, coordinated locally

BIMEO’s valorGas® technology uses SEPURAN® Green hollow-fibre membranes to separate CO₂ from methane in the upgrading process. The methane-rich gas can then be used as part of HOFOR’s city-gas production.

For a project of this complexity, successful delivery depends not only on the selected process technology, but also on coordination across multiple technical, commercial and project interfaces.

That is where GGS adds value: as one Nordic point of contact for selected technology partners, utilities, producers, EPCs and project developers. We help connect project needs with the right specialist expertise and stay close to the process from early evaluation and technology selection through delivery, commissioning and service.

A significant Nordic reference

For GGS, ECOTEC and BIMEO, the HOFOR project is an important Nordic reference for renewable-gas infrastructure. It demonstrates how specialist gas treatment and upgrading technology can support ambitious, locally based energy systems when combined with long-term planning and strong project partnerships.

We are proud to have contributed to this milestone project and congratulate HOFOR, BIOFOS, Nordic Green Engineering, ECOTEC and BIMEO on the inauguration.
